Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud announced on Friday that each bench of the Supreme Court will tackle 10 transfer petitions and 10 bail applications daily. This decision, stemming from a full-court meeting, aims to expedite the resolution of approximately 3,000 pending transfer petitions before the winter recess commencing on December 17.
CJI Chandrachud emphasized that all 13 benches, given the current strength, will collectively dispose of around 130 matters each day, totaling 650 per week. Consequently, within the five weeks leading up to the winter vacation, all transfer petitions are anticipated to be addressed.
Highlighting the significance of matters related to personal liberty, the Chief Justice directed that following the transfer petitions, each bench will address 10 bail matters daily. He explained, “Ten transfer petitions because those are family matters, followed by 10 bail matters across all benches. Then we will start the regular work.”
Earlier on November 15, CJI Chandrachud expressed vigilance in monitoring the listing of cases to ensure timely hearings for fresh matters. Additionally, he underscored the court’s efforts to minimize human interaction through technology in the listing process, acknowledging challenges in this regard.
During a felicitation event organized by the Supreme Court Bar Association, the Chief Justice had previously acknowledged the persistent issue of case listing in the Supreme Court. He commended the strides made during former CJI U U Lalit’s tenure and urged for the institutionalization of processes to ensure continued efficiency in case listings.
